Red Lacquer Gilt Painted Cabinet

This red lacquer cabinet is built in the traditional “fengjia” (square corner) design.  The side panels and the back panels are finished with black lacquer.  The front is finished with thick red lacquer and gilded paintings.  However, most of the paintings have been worn off leaving only traces of darker paints.  The door panels are standard miter,  mortise, and tenon construction with floating panels.  The side panel is tenoned into the frame which carries the mortised joints and is furthered strengthened with a brace on each side.  The legs are strengthened with a stretcher on the side.  The apron on the front legs is simple and undecorated.
